Cultivated sod is easy to install; however, the rolls are relatively heavy. Depending on the number of rolls to be installed and whether more than one person is helping, the task could become easier.
Typically, in an open area that doesn't require much cutting, three people can install 4,000 square feet in about 3 to 4 hours. Uneven areas will require more time.
Check out our “ Sod vs. Seeding ” page for a good comparison.
We offer small rolls of cultivated sod, each covering 10 square feet (3 square metres), which are perfect for trimming and patching damaged areas of your lawn.
In an average pickup truck, you can fit between 400 to 600 square feet (37 to 56 square metres).
Sod should be watered until each piece is fully saturated (until the lines between the sod pieces are no longer visible). To check, lift the corners of different pieces and make sure the roots are starting to grow into the soil. If the newly installed sod begins to show yellow patches, it means it's lacking moisture.
When watering, the best way to measure is to place a regular glass where the sprinkler will reach. Time how long it takes to fill the glass with 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water—for example, 30 minutes. This tells you that each area of your lawn needs 30 minutes of watering daily for at least two weeks.

Newly laid sod takes 10 to 14 days to establish its roots. After that, you can mow it for the first time. The grass should be dry, and the mower should be set to its highest setting; no more than one-third of the grass height should be cut during the first mowing.
