When people think about lawn care, spring is usually the first season that comes to mind. After a long Quebec winter, it's exciting to see green grass return and start spending more time outdoors. However, what many homeowners don't realize is that fall is actually the most important season for building a healthy lawn. The care you give your lawn during September and October plays a major role in how it will look the following spring. By taking a few simple steps now, you'll encourage stronger roots, thicker grass, and a healthier lawn for years to come.

Why Grass Grows Best in the Fall

As summer comes to an end, the weather begins to work in your lawn’s favour. Cooler daytime temperatures reduce stress on the grass, while the soil remains warm enough to encourage strong root growth. Instead of using its energy to survive extreme heat, your lawn can now focus on developing a healthy root system before winter arrives. The stronger those roots become this fall, the healthier and greener your lawn will be next spring.

Fertilize Before Winter

One of the best things you can do for your lawn in the fall is apply a quality fertilizer. You can begin fall applications once daily temperatures remain below 25°C.

Using fertilizer in the fall helps:

  • Strengthen the root system.

  • Store nutrients for the winter months.

  • Improve overall lawn health.

  • Encourage an earlier, greener lawn in the spring.

Overseed Thin Areas

If your lawn has become thin or developed bare patches over the summer, early fall is the perfect time to overseed. The combination of warm soil, cooler temperatures, and increased moisture gives new grass seed an excellent chance to germinate and establish before winter.

For the best results:

  • Remove dead grass and debris.

  • Loosen the top layer of soil.

  • Add a thin layer of quality soil if needed.

  • Spread the seed evenly.

  • Cover the seed with another thin layer of ground.

  • Keep the area consistently moist until the new grass is established.

Consider Aerating Your Lawn

Over time, soil naturally becomes compacted from foot traffic, lawn equipment, and rainfall. When this happens, water, oxygen, and nutrients have a harder time reaching the roots. Core aeration helps relieve soil compaction by removing small plugs of soil from the lawn. This allows your grass to:

  • Develop deeper roots.

  • Absorb water more efficiently.

  • Take better advantage of fertilizer applications.

  • Grow thicker and healthier.

If your lawn feels hard underfoot or water tends to pool after it rains, aeration may be beneficial.

Continue Watering Until the Ground Freezes

As temperatures cool, many homeowners stop watering altogether. However, your lawn continues growing below the surface well into the fall. If rainfall is limited, continue watering deeply once or twice a week until the ground freezes. This helps maintain healthy roots going into winter and reduces stress caused by dry conditions. If you've recently installed new sod or overseeded your lawn, those areas will require more frequent watering until they are fully established.
