Transition from Spring to Summer As we approach the end of June, one of the most common questions we hear is: "How much water does new sod need?" With spring lawn treatments coming to an end, the answer becomes especially important. If you've been following our suggested fertilizing schedule, your final spring application should be completed by June 24th. Similarly, the ideal window for seeding is beginning to close as temperatures rise.

At this point in the season, the focus shifts from feeding and seeding your lawn to maintaining it. With warmer temperatures arriving in the Terrebonne and Mascouche areas, proper watering becomes the most important factor in ensuring the success of your new sod. While sod provides an instantly green lawn, it still needs time to establish strong roots in the soil. Water Immediately After Installation

Watering should begin immediately once the sod has been installed. This first watering period is critical to soak the sod to keep it from drying out and to help it make better contact with the soil. During hot, sunny, or windy weather, it is especially important to monitor the moisture levels.

Keep the Sod Wet During the First Week

During the first two weeks, the goal is to keep the sod consistently moist while the roots begin establishing themselves. Depending on weather conditions, multiple light waterings throughout the day may be necessary. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN water on a sunny day in extreme heat. Pay special attention to edges, corners, and areas exposed to full sun, as they tend to dry out more quickly. You will know you are watering it enough if you lift the sod roll and the roots are wet. 

Encourage Deep Root Growth

After the two weeks, the roots will gradually begin attaching themselves to the soil beneath. As this happens, you can begin reducing the frequency of watering while increasing the amount of water applied during each watering session. This encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil, helping your lawn become stronger and more resilient during the hot summer months.

How to Tell if Your Sod Needs More Water

Your lawn will often show signs when it needs additional moisture:

• Grass blades begin to curl or fold.

• The lawn develops a dull blue-grey colour.

• Footprints remain visible after walking on the grass.

• Edges begin to shrink or pull apart.

If you notice any of these signs, increase watering before the lawn becomes stressed.
