Fertilizer - Your First Step to a Healthy Lawn in 2025

What are your lawn goals? Are you looking for a rich yard for children to play? Hoping to stun your neighbors with awesome shades of green? Whatever you might want out of your grass, we should all start with the same pivotal step. That’s right, we’re talking about the first application of fertilizer of the year!

In order to encourage healthy growth, a strong root system, and of course that vibrant colour, your grass needs essential nutrients - all which are provided by fertilizer. Nitrogen for a lush top growth, check! Phosphorus to support strong roots, you bet! Potassium to help fight disease and offer stress tolerance, absolutely! All of the above will help your lawn flourish each year.

That's why we fertilize - but when do so? If you’re reading this blog from our own region of Terrebonne-Mascouche, the time is now! In the warming weather, weed seeds will soon begin to germinate, and before you know it your front yard is covered in patches of crabgrass. But don’t fret! Our friend fertilizer helps us get ahead of this. Feeding your lawn with the necessary nutrients will also help prevent weeds from taking hold. Weeds will have trouble growing if there’s too much lush grass in the way!

To achieve the best results, mow your lawn a day or two before you fertilize. A little grass out of the way will make it easier to spread evenly. Not to mention, those grass clippings will offer nutrients to your lawn as well! To get the job done, you’ll need a lawn spreader, a broom, a hose, and obviously, the fertilizer itself. You can get the equipment at your local hardware store - (buy Canadian!) but we can help you with the fertilizer!

Lawns are different all over the world, evolving to meet the climate of their region. Here in Terrebonne-Mascouche, Gazonnière Alexander offers a line of products from SynAgri to meet Quebec’s wide spectrum of seasonal conditions. Getting your lawn fertilized early is an important first step towards keeping your grass healthy year round - yep, even during its hibernation season!

But fertilizing your lawn is not a one-and-done! You’ll want to keep enough fertilizer on hand to make sure you’re equipped for the year, spreading more later in the spring, in late summer, and again in the late fall.

This phase of fertilization is the first of many steps to take care of your grass through the year. Keep visiting this blog, as well as following Gazonniere Alexander on Facebook and Instagram for more lawn care advice. And if you need any fertilizer, sod, or more lawn care products, we’re here for you, Terrebonne-Mascouche!
