Summer is in full swing, and here in Quebec, we are experiencing the weather we have come to expect this year. Humid days, strong storms, and - you bet - the heat! However, if our seasonal climate patterns hold, we will be turning down our air conditioners later in the month of August! With the changing of the seasons comes a whole set of action items to make sure your lawn is the best in can be in 2025, as well as giving it a head start for 2026!

Take advantage of the rain!

A good rainfall means moist soil, and moist soil means weeds are vulnerable! A soft soil is a great opportunity to grab annoying weeds and yank them and their roots right out of the ground! Grab your toolbox, take out your screwdriver and get right to the bottom of the root. Make this job as thorough as possible.

Seed, seed, seed! (Nevertheless, not every year)

Did you seed last year? If yes, you can skip this step in 2025. We recommend that you keep a semi-annual seeding schedule, once the strongest of the summer’s heat has passed. Not to mention, so long as you have stayed on top of clearing your lawn of weeds this year, the worst of the dandelions, crabgrass, and thistle should be behind you. A lack of weeds and reduced heat is the optimal time to break out the bag of 100% Kentucky Seeds, Classicturf, or whichever breed of seeds suit your unique lawn.

In addition, here is a helpful tip - grab a marker and write the date of your last seeding on the bag. This way you will not be guessing year to year whether it is time for a seeding or not!

Fertilizing

Your lawn needs it is nutrients as things start cooling down and we head into a cooler fall. Choosing a balanced, slow-release fertilizer will continue to deliver essential nutrients over an extended length of time.

Fafard Chicken Manure

Yes, there are great fertilizers at your disposal, such as SynAgri or humble chicken manure. Nevertheless, do not discount the one already growing in your own yard! As we recommend all year, when you mow your lawn, limit or stop raking the grass clippings entirely. Let the grass decompose and return essential nutrients back to your lawn. It does not get much more eco-friendly than that!

Inspect for aeration

Soil compaction can obstruct the absorption of water and nutrients, ultimately harming your grass. Look for indicators of compaction, such as water pooling or patchy grass. If the soil feels hard and compact, it is time to arrange for aeration to resolve the problem. Aeration involves creating small holes in the soil to enhance the flow of air, water, and nutrients to the roots.

Many of the above tips, tricks and advices are appropriate for lawns of most climates, but we ask you to keep in mind that Gazonnière Alexander is based proudly in Terrebonne- Mascouche, Quebec, and our blogs are written with our neighbors in mind.
